Undergraduate Teaching

The course is intended as an introduction to Biochemistry and molecular biology for the 2nd MBBS students. Biochemistry, the chemical basis of life is studied in four major sections. The first is the molecular design of life which includes the structure of the cell, structure and function of biomolecules, basic concepts of and kinetics of enzymes and bioenergetics. The second section is on cellular metabolism, emphasizing on enzymatic mechanisms, cellular compartmentalization and integration of metabolic systems. One major perquisite for the maintenance of health is that there be optimal dietary intake of nutrients. Therefore the third section will be on foods and nutrition. The fourth section is an application of the knowledge gained so far in understanding the biochemical basis of health and disease and therapeutic intervention. Biochemical methods used in diagnosis of disease and interpretation of standard chemical pathology reports are also done
