About Us and History

The Faculty of Medicine wasestablishedin the premises of the General Hospital, Galle, in July 1980, initiallyaffiliated to theUniversity of Colombo.Although the firstfivebatchesof medical studentswereadmitted to the Ruhuna University College,theyattended the preclinical course at the Faculties of MedicineinColombo and Peradeniya.The fisrt batch of studentsadmitted in 1978 and successful at the Second Examination for Medical Degrees held in Colombo and Peradeniya,commenced theirPara-clinical and clinical training at Galle in 1980.Construction of buildings for the Faculty at Karapitiya commenced in December, 1980 and the Faculty moved to its newpremises in September 1983. From the AcademicYear 1983/84onwards,students were admitted direct to the Faculty ofMedicine, Galleandthe entire courseof Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)began to be conductedat theFaculty.During the last decade,Faculty started three more undergraduate degree programmes; Bachelor of Science inNursing, Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science and Bachelor in Pharmacy..These three degree programmeswere moved to the newly established Faculty of Allied Health Sciences in 2017.TheMBBS Degree awarded by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna is recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.This degree is placed atthelevel6of the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF).The Faculty provides academic, research and service functions through its15academic departments and three units that arerecognized by the University Grants Commission.

9The Teaching Hospitalat Karapitiya(THK)is situatedoppersitetheFacultyof Medicine.Apart from major disciplines such asinternal medicine, psychiatry, surgery and paediatrics, THK provides a wide range of services including renal transplant, majorcardiac surgery, emergency & trauma care and intensive care in many fields.Obstetrics andGynaecologyunits aresituated intheTeachingHospital at Mahamodera. Teaching in all clinical disciplines is done in these two hospitals.Comminuty trainingcomponent ofCommunity Medicine is doneinthe Field Training Area at Bope-Poddala,located close to the Faculty ofMedicine.Students alsoreceive training inruralhealthat AkuressaDistrict Hospital.
