Population Health (PH) is a relatively new field and it broadly addresses the issues such as the distribution of health outcomes and patterns of determinants of health in a population. PH is generally defined as the health outcomes of a group of individuals, and the distribution of such outcomes, and the socio-economic determinants of health within the group. A PH approach will complement the biomedical focus of individual risks and clinical factors related specific diseases. Apart from the health outcomes and determinants, population health addresses the policies and interventions that link those two major components. Accordingly, population health strategies are designed to affect the entire population, or specific social groups.

Population Health Research Center established in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna is primarily dedicated to research in the field of PH. In addition it intends to popularize the concept of PH among medical community and academics.
