  • The main objective of the Department of Psychiatry is to provide training in Psychiatry for the undergraduates of Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna. The teaching programme underwent dramatic changes since 2012 with the introduction of psychiatry as a final year separate subject.
  • Current programme includes 5 terms of lectures starting from the 9th term and clinical training in the final year.
  • Students undergo clinical training in two stages, first 2 weeks short appointment during 3rd /4th year under the supervision of the Health Ministry consultant and then 8weeks professorial appointment in the final year at the University Psychiatry Unit at Teaching Hospital Karapitiya. Students get exposed to a wide variety of mental health issues in the areas of general adult, liaison, child &adolescents, geriatric, addiction, and community psychiatry. In addition students get an opportunity to work with the Multidisciplinary team attached to the Unit.
  • Assessments include: In course assessment (during the appointment), continuous assessment, OSCE (patient and non- patient), portfolio based viva and the long case at the end of the appointment.
  • Theory component is assessed with MCQs and the SEQs at the end of the final year.
