Welcome to FMAS 2026

The Annual Academic Sessions of Faculty of Medicine is an event that brings together medical undergraduates, academics, researchers and other health care professionals to present and discuss research findings, best practices and innovations in the field of medicine in Sri Lanka. The sessions are held once a year and are attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers, practitioners, academic members and students.

During the Annual Academic Sessions, participants present research papers, case studies, and share their experiences and knowledge about various aspects of health such as clinical medicine, public health, basic sciences and applied sciences. The event provides an opportunity for participants to network with colleagues, share ideas, learn from each other and contribute to the advancement of health system of the country.

The Annual Academic Sessions also feature an oration, keynote speech and symposium with expert panels on emerging issues and challenges in health, which provide thought-provoking insights into the current state of health system in Sri Lanka. Further FMAS offers medical undergraduates to enhance the knowledge and enthusiasm thus promoting research career as young researchers.

Message from the co-chairpersons FMAS 2026

It is with immense pleasure that we forward this message regarding the 14th Faculty of Medicine Academic Sessions (FMAS) 2026, scheduled for the 13th of May 2026 at the TW Wikramanyake auditorium, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna. Throughout the years, the sessions have brought various disciplines in medicine together in diverse combinations, adding much colour to the event.

This year, the theme” Beyond prescription: navigating therapy in medical practice” highlights the countless number of measures that contribute to patient well-being, which is not just limited to what is merely written in a prescription. The keynote speaker is Dr. Pushpa Punchihewa, a Senior Consultant Paediatrician who has been an integral part of child health in Galle for many years in the past.

The symposium of the sessions will cover a wide range of subjects that come under the umbrella of a broad topic, “Behind the screen: Addiction, Resistance & Dependence,” which is contributed by eminent speakers who have excelled in their respective fields.

The special feature of FMAS 2026 this year is a pre-congress. It is an international symposium and workshop on Asthma & Allergy scheduled to be held on the 7th & 8th of May 2026 at the auditorium of Germen Sri Lanka Friendship Hospital for Women. This symposium and workshop is contributed by many resource persons, both local and Indian, who are experts on the field. The first day, the symposium cover different topics on asthma and allergy, which expose the audience to new vistas in the field and provide meaningful insights. Second day, the workshop will provide hands-on skill experience for the participants, which definitely be a help in their day today pratctice.
