Elective students
During elective placements in the Department of Medicine, the students can actively participate in our daily teaching ward rounds in the two medical wards which includes 64 beds. The two wards (male and female) usually have patient numbers approximately 50- 100. During the ward rounds, we may direct you to examine and present patients in order to develop clinical skills and guide you to have a better understanding of diagnostic and therapeutic decision making in medicine in a resource limited setting. The elective students can participate in case discussions and conferences held in the Teaching Hospital, Karapitiya. Department of Medicine conducts Grand rounds on Friday at the Department where you will be able to join. Elective students can obtain a hard copy of the weekly schedule of the elective appointment from the Office of the Department of Medicine. It will be a great opportunity for the students to see many variety of cases of tropical and infectious diseases which is a rarity in a single setting. Our competent registrars in Medicine will conduct classes or sessions on Tropical diseases to the Elective students on topics such as Dengue, leptospirosis, tuberculosis, typhus etc. Students can observe and discuss investigation reports, X-Ray, ECG, CT, MRI and actively discuss the further management with the Medical staff. We have on-take/casualty on every 5th day and the next day after the casualty is usually very busy as we have to care for 150-200 patients in both wards. Elective students can actively participate in discussions during ward rounds. As the final year medical students are also present in the the wards could get busy especially in the mornings. Best way to obtain a good exposure would be to follow the senior registrar/ consultant on ward rounds where the students concerns and questions could be addressed.
