Dean’s Message

The Faculty of Medicine University of Ruhuna has a proud history of over forty years. From its humble origin as the Medical Faculty of the Ruhuna University College in the premises of old general hospital in Mahamodara Galle with an intake of about 70 students, it flourished into a faculty with an yearly intake of 200 students in its present premises at Karapitiya. As a person who has seen and being a part of these developments I am proud to be the Dean and am grateful to all, including previous deans who worked hard to bring this institute to its present stature.

We run a traditional curriculum which emphasize a heavily on basic sciences and extensive clinical training and community oriented programs. Presently it has become a popular place with increasing demand from foreign medical students to do their elective appointments.

In addition to the infrastructural development and proposed increasing student intake we are in a process of making changes to the curriculum to improve the skills and professional behavior of the students to upgrade the quality of care that our students will provide to the society in the future. With all these developments we work as a team to make this the most sorted medical faculty in the country by both local and foreign medical students.
