Thai Pongal Vizha 2024

Thai Pongal festival is a harvest festival that marks the end of the winter season. It is a significant cultural event, symbolizing prosperity and abundance which is celebrated by Tamils. It is celebrated over four days- Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Maatu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal.
For the 3rd consecutive year, we, the students of Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna celebrated the Thaipongal on 25th of February 2024 in the lobby of the faculty auditorium. The event was graced by the Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena, Vice Chanceller of University of Ruhuna, Snr.Prof. T.P. Weerarathna, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna, Academic staffs, Non-academic staffs and students of Faculty of Medicine. Dr.I.R.Ragunathan, Paediatric Cardiologist also attended this event as a guest. A highlight of this event was making Pongal. A fresh pot of rice was cooked and when the milk began to boil, everyone started hailing ‘Pongalo pongal’ happily spreading the blessings of the God Sun. Student exhibited their creativity and artistic skills through making Kolam using coloured powders. As per the rituals, we prayed the Sun and Pooja was performed by the Chief Priest of Murugan temple. The celebration featured lively cultural performances, including classical dance and Bhajana songs. Students enthusiastically participated, showcasing the rich cultural heritage. And many games also conducted among students. Pongal, wada, Aval, laddu, chick peas, juice and milk were served for everyone who participated. Through traditional rituals, cultural performances and community engagement activities, the event exemplified the university’s commitment to celebrating diversity and promoting cultural exchange.
